Officially inaugurated in 1999, the Sepang International circuit hosted its first MotoGP Grand Prix and Formula 1 Grand Prix the same year. Largely appreciated by fans and riders for its wide straights and sweeping corners, the circuit is one of motorsports’ darling venues and has played a significant part in Malaysia’s industrialisation.
Despite being fairly new, the circuit has already quite a bit of History to it, some of which is tragic. Sepang particularly brings back to mind the tragic death of Italian MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli in October 2011. The Italian Speedster died at Lap 2, on Turn 11. Today, he is commemorated in San Marino through the circuit’s name: Misano Marco Simoncelli.
